Maoist Carrying Rs 1 Lakh Reward Killed In Encounter In Chhattisgarh
May 18, 2024
A Maoist, who was wanted in connection with 16 cases and carried a bounty of Rs 1 lakh on his head, was killed in an encounter with the police in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district on Saturday, an official said.

The gunfight took place around 6.30 am in the forest near Banjarpara village under Polampalli police station limits, where a team of police personnel was out on an anti-Naxal operation, the official said.

The operation was launched on Friday night based on inputs about the presence of senior Maoists, including the secretary of the Konta area committee of Maoists, Vetti Mangdu, and area command-in-chief Hitesh, along with 15-20 cadres in forests of Tolnai, Tetrai, Banjarpara, and Arlampalli villages, he said.

The exchange of fire lasted for about 20 to 25 minutes, following which Maoists escaped into the dense forest after security personnel started zeroing in on them, the official said.

During a search at the encounter site, the police team recovered the body of a Maoist, a muzzle-loading gun, a tiffin bomb, three gelatin rods, an improvised explosive device (IED), two cordex wires, a Maoist uniform and items of daily use, he said.

The Maoist, Dudhi Hunga (35), was active as the militia commander of the RPC (Revolutionary People's Committee) in the Konta area committee of Maoists, he said.

Hunga was wanted in 16 cases registered in three police stations of Sukma district and was carrying a bounty of Rs 1 lakh on his head, the official said.

With this incident, 105 Maoists have been killed in separate encounters with security forces in the state so far this year.

On May 10, 12 Maoists were killed in an encounter with security personnel in Bijapur district, while 10, including three women, were gunned down in a forest along the border of Narayanpur and Kanker districts on April 30.

On April 16, 29 Maoists died in an encounter with security forces in the state's Kanker district, police said.

5 Of Family Hacked To Death, Man Found Dead In Chhattisgarh: Police
May 18, 2024
Five members of a family were hacked to death while another person was found hanging in Chhattisgarh's Sarangarh-Bilaigarh district on Saturday, police said.

The incident took place at Thargaon village under Saliha police station limits, around 200 km from Raipur, district Superintendent of Police Pushkar Sharma told PTI.

Those killed were identified as Hemlal Sahu (55), his wife Jagmoti Sahu (50), their daughters Meera Sahu (30) and Mamta Sahu (35), and the couple's grandson Ayush (5). Manoj Sahu, a resident of the same village, was found hanging on the premises.

The five family members bore axe injuries. "Circumstantial evidence suggests that Manoj killed them before hanging himself," the SP said.

After being alerted by locals, a police team rushed to the spot and sent the bodies for autopsy, the official said.

A forensic team has also been sent and further probe was underway, he added.

Wipro COO Amit Choudhary To Step Down, Sanjeev Jain Named Successor
May 17, 2024
Wipro said today that its chief operating officer Amit Choudhary is stepping down, with Sanjeev Jain, current global head of business operations named as his successor with immediate effect.

This is the second-level senior exit at the firm in less than a week.

Amit Choudhary is leaving the company to pursue opportunities outside the organization, and May 31 will be his last day at the firm, it said in an exchange filing.

His exit comes after Wipro's Asia Pacific, India, Middle East and Africa (APMEA) President Anis Chenchah stepped down last week.

Both Anis Chenchah and Amit Choudhary were picked by former CEO Thierry Delaporte as they worked together at French tech giant Capgemini.

Amit Choudhary was the COO for Capgemini's financial services unit, while Anis Chenchah the was the head of its business service unit.

The exits could pose as a setback as CEO Srinivas Pallia said the company aims to win deals through artificial intelligence-infused consulting, and that it would prioritise growth in the fourth quarter post-earnings conference.

In fiscal year 2024, Wipro's full-year IT services revenue slid 4.4% in constant currency terms, marking the first fall since 2021.

Jain, who joined Wipro in April 2023, currently leads its global business operations, service delivery, information security, and enterprise risk management, and works closely with all business units, the company said.

AAP Withdraws Petition From Court On Allotment Of Land For Its Offices
May 17, 2024
The Aam Aadmi Party on Friday withdrew its plea before the Supreme Court seeking allotment of land in the national capital for construction of its offices.

Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for AAP, submitted before a bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra that a single judge Bench of the Delhi High Court has been routinely hearing the matter.

"I wish to withdraw it," Mr Singhvi said and sought liberty to approach the apex court after the high court pronounces its verdict.

"We permit the withdrawal of the SLP and in terms of the request made before this Court, we grant liberty to the petitioner to adopt appropriate proceedings in accordance with law, in the event the petitioner is aggrieved by the ultimate outcome of the proceedings before the High Court," the top court noted in its order.

The AAP, in its plea before the high court, has sought a direction to the Union government to take necessary steps according to law to allot it suitable land in New Delhi to enable the party to construct offices for its national and Delhi state units at the earliest.

It also sought a direction to the authorities to ensure that the land allotted is preferably in centrally located areas of Delhi and is free from encumbrances and encroachments so construction can commence immediately.

The plea also sought quashing of the June 26 and September 15 letters of the housing ministry rejecting AAP's request for allotment of land.

Its request was rejected on the ground that no vacant land was available on Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg or other centrally located areas of Delhi for allotment.

The AAP said the National People's Party, which was recognised as a national party as recently as 2019 with one member each in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, was allotted land at North Avenue for construction of its national party office.

Other national parties also currently have offices on land allotted in central Delhi, including Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg and Akbar Road, it said.

The Supreme court had earlier this year directed AAP to vacate its offices in Rouse Avenue as the land on which it stood was allotted to the Delhi High Court for expansion of its district courts there.

The Delhi's ruling party has sought a suitable piece of land for its offices given its national party status.

AAP Blasts Swati Maliwal, Says Video From Arvind Kejriwal's Home Exposes Lie
May 17, 2024
The AAP on Friday pushed back against senior leader Swati Maliwal's claims - that she was "slapped seven times (and) kicked in the stomach" by Arvind Kejriwal's aide inside the Chief Minister's home - and accused her of colluding with the BJP to discredit the party during the ongoing general election.

The AAP's Atishi referred to a 52-second video of Monday's confrontation between Ms Maliwal and staffers at Mr Kejriwal's home - in which she is seen (briefly) and heard arguing with the guards, who repeatedly demand she leave the premises. The woman in the video - believed to be Ms Maliwal - refuses, threatens the guards with police action, and then dares them to physically throw her out.

Pointing to the video - which Ms Maliwal has said is being viewed out of context - the AAP leader claimed it exposed "plans" hatched by the BJP to target Mr Kejriwal - who was released on bail last week after his arrest in March on corruption charges - days before the Delhi Lok Sabha election.

Atishi claimed the BJP is in cahoots with Ms Maliwal, whom she labelled the "face and pawn of this conspiracy" - and that the "rattled" saffron party had been forced into this move because of the growing popularity of the Delhi Chief Minister and his status in the national political landscape.

"Ever since Arvind Kejriwal got bail the BJP has been rattled. Due to this, BJP hatched a conspiracy, under which Swati Maliwal was sent to Arvind Kejriwal's house on the morning of May 13. They intended to accuse the Chief Minister... but he was not there then, so he was saved," she said.

Swati Maliwal filed a complaint with Delhi Police on Thursday evening.

"Swati Maliwal was the face and pawn of this conspiracy..." Atishi declared.

Referring to the video from Monday, Atishi said the 52-second clip underlined the false nature of Ms Maliwal allegations. "In her complaint to the police she said she was assaulted... (but) the video which shows her sitting comfortably and threatening officials... also seen threatening Bibhav Kumar."

"Her clothes were not torn and there was no injury on her head..." Atishi declared, hitting back at Ms Maliwal's claim that she was slapped and kicked repeatedly, and suffered injuries.

In the growing back-and-forth between the two sides, Ms Maliwal has yet to respond.

On Thursday, in her first public comment on this row, Ms Maliwal called for action against those who allegedly attacked her, and wrote on X, "The last few days have been very difficult..."

"'Political Hitman' Vs 'Truth Of Swati Maliwal'"

Atishi's response came after the AAP and Ms Maliwal fought anew over a video leaked online today.

Ms Maliwal hit out at a "political hitman" - an epithet seen by many as referring to Mr Kejriwal, or possibly Bibhav Kumar - who released the clip to "save himself", while the AAP simply re-posted the video with the terse message, "The truth of Swati Maliwal."

The party has also dismissed reports Ms Maliwal had been summoned to a meeting by the Chief Minister; Atishi pointed out this evening that Mr Kejriwal was, in fact, not at home.

Atishi also confirmed that Mr Kumar - who faces charges that include assault and criminal intimidation - based on Ms Maliwal's statement Thursday - has filed a counter-complaint.

The entire controversy, which broke Monday, has also spun into a political row, with the BJP gleefully attacking the AAP and Mr Kejriwal ahead of voting for Delhi's seven Lok Sabha seats.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman led the BJP's charge this morning, calling Mr Kejriwal "shameless" for continuing to associate with Bibhav Kumar and demanded he apologise.

The Congress, which is allied with the AAP for this election, has been more circumspect; senior leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is the only big name from the party to have spoken up, and she said that while would stand by any woman who claimed assault, this row is an internal matter of the AAP.

Mr Kejriwal, whose bail ends June 2, has faced renewed calls to resign, but has maintained radio silence on this topic, focusing, instead, on his party's campaign for the Lok Sabha election.
